I pushed my plate away from me and reached for my glass of red wine. Fi's chilli was delicious, but I didn't have the appetite. Shepherd and I might have come across a lead in the Chas Taylor case, but Jed Ross was still missing. I feared the worst. Berryfield had not moved from his manor house. We hadn't found the hulk who had been seen shoving Ross into the back of the car at Galaxy. We had nothing.

“Mike.” Fi reached over the table and laid her hand upon my wrist.

“Sorry, I keep expecting the phone to ring. I keep expecting that Grayson is going to phone and tell me that they have found Ross' body.”

“I'm sure he's ok, Mike.”

“If he's ok, where is he?”

Fi said nothing more, but concern was written over her face. She started to clear the plates away and I watched her.

“You haven't forgotten that Cat and I are going to the cinema tonight, have you?”

“No, of course not,” I lied. “I'll finish clearing away. You go and get ready.”

“Thanks.” Fi planted a kiss on my cheek and I heard her footsteps disappearing upstairs.

Actually, I was glad that Fi and Cat were going out to watch a soppy romantic comedy. I wasn't good company. The two cases were not going anywhere and I needed time on my own to brood. I plunged my hands into the hot soapy water and started scouring the chilli pan, grateful for something to do. Typically, as soon as my hands were nicely soapy, my phone rang. Grabbing the tea-towel, I picked it up.

“Malone.”

“It's Miller, Sir. Stephen Berryfield had just left his house.”

“Ok, follow him at a safe distance and report back.” I felt a surge of adrenaline rush through me.

“If he happens to meet the man that we are looking for, do you want us to apprehend him, Sir?”

“No, call for back-up and keep watching. Do nothing until back-up arrives.”

“Understood, Sir.” He cut the call.

I sat down and tapped in Shepherd's number. I needed to tell him to be ready.
